SINGAPORE (AP) - Visitors gawked at sex-enhancing furniture and other displays Friday at Singapore's first-ever 'Sex Expo' - part of a bid to shake off the country's staid image - but armed auxiliary police still patrolled the fair.

The three-day Sexpo Singapore 2005 - the first event of its kind here - was government-approved, but had tight restrictions. All events, like a sensual dance workshop and games, had to be cleared in advance by authorities. "We've pulled through," said Sexpo director Kenny Goh. "It will enrich our notion about sex."

Singapore, a wealthy Southeast Asian city-state of 4.2 million people, has been trying to shake off its reputation for stodginess. After years of warning of decadent Western influences, the government wants to cater to a generation exposed to overseas influence.

On Friday, visitors snapped photos of sexual aids. Others pored over scripts about sexuality in ancient China, the ancestral homeland of most Singaporeans.

Many visitors shied away from interviews, but some were enthusiastic.

"We should have nothing to hide about sex," said visitor David Khoo, 26. "It has taken time for Singapore, but it's finally here."

There were, however, limits.

Nudity was banned, as were lewd behaviour, obscenity or acts promoting homosexuality. Singapore still outlaws oral sex and homosexual acts, both punishable by imprisonment, though penalties are seldom meted out.

Parts of the expos were off-limits to those under 21. Armed auxiliary police personnel strolled through the exhibition hall, making sure no laws were broken.

"Sex is not a topic we talk about openly in Singapore ... until recently," said exhibitor Ronnie Pang, who was offering tours of porn film sets in the United States.

Within an hour of opening his booth, he said, two people had signed up for his next tour in January.

Other booths showcased "ergonomic" sex-friendly furniture, sexual aids, dating services and information on sexual health.

The exhibition at the Singapore Expo centre was set to run through Sunday. Organizers expected 60,000 visitors.

Singapore draws snickers - and often anger - at home and abroad for its tight censorship and perceived institutional prudery.

Restriction abound. Playboy magazine is banned. Western TV shows like HBO's Sex and the City and Six Feet Under are carefully censored, and some books, films, websites and even popular songs are banned.
